What Foods to Serve Your Kids so they can Excel in School :)

A healthy mind and body are very important for kids to do well in school. Parents can always help their kids to excel in school by serving them foods that will help them to enhance their memory during an exam or to keep them mentally alert when in the classroom.

Foods that can accomplish this are:

Whole Grains
This is one of the brain-boosting foods that every parent should serve their kids to excel in school.  Whole grains are a good source of steady glucose that will help keep your child calm and relaxed. Examples are oatmeal,  whole grain breads, brown rice, and wheat bran. Fortified whole grain cereals are the best source of folic acid that can help prevent memory loss.Whole grains are complex carbohydrates which will  provide the body and brain with lasting energy.

Another food that kids can eat to enhance their memory are berries. Berries are abundant in anthocyanins, which are antioxidants. Your child should consume foods that are rich with antioxidants. Antioxidant called fisetin, are  found in strawberries and studies have shown fisetin helps to avoid brain cells from dying. People experience memory loss as neurons die, and with these antioxidants creates strong pathways between neurons, that can help maintain a long-term memory.

Fish are rich in polyunsaturated fats omega-3 fatty acids that kids need to improve mental capacity and ward off memory lapses. Eating fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines can reduce the risk of dementia. Fish oils that are present in eating fish are the key ingredients for your kids brain to function at a higher level. But if your kids don’t feel like eating fish, you can also serve them with walnuts,pumpkin seeds, flax seed, and soybeans, which are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

To help kids stay mentally alert during their classes or examinations in school, they must eat fruits. Fruits are another good source of glucose that our body needs to keep us energized. Fruits can give the bloodstream a glucose boost. But keep in mind to eat only fresh fruits, since they digest easily.

Sweet Potatoes
To help improve memory and brain function, sweet potatoes can’t be beat. Sweet potatoes have a large amount of Vitamin B6 that the brain needs in order to manufacture neurotransmitters that allows communication to take place within certain parts of the brain.Sweet potatoes are also abundant in carbohydrates. Kids need to eat foods that have ample amount of carbohydrates because these are the only source of fuel that the brain will use to function well.

Foods to Avoid
Parents must avoid serving their kids foods that are high in saturated fats, trans fats and sodium. These additives can raise cholesterol and may cause high blood pressure even in our young ones.  To prevent an energy crash, parents should also limit their kids consumption of caffeine, sugar and other sweetners, especially high fructose corn syrup.
